The Australian Government has announced its intention to expand the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme to eligible mid-scale solar systems above 100 kW and up to 1 MW. The change is expected to apply to qualifying installations from 1 October 2026, subject to the necessary regulations being in place.
This is intended to close what the Federal Government has described as the "missing middle" — mid-sized commercial sites that were too large for household incentives but too small for large-scale renewable energy programs.
Where eligible, the STC value would be applied as an upfront discount at the point of installation, funded by electricity retailers under the existing scheme, rather than paid back over time.
- Eligible system size proposed to rise from 100kW to 1MW — a tenfold increase
- Would apply as an upfront discount on installation cost, not a delayed rebate
- Government has referred to an indicative value of around 20% of installation cost for a medium-sized system
- Relevant to manufacturing, retail, schools, hospitals and similar "missing middle" sites
Proposed commencement date for the SRES expansion, subject to regulations being finalised. Settings are intended to remain in place through 2030.
Reflects the Australian Government's announced intention as at August 2026, which remains subject to the necessary regulations being finalised. So, what could this mean for your business?
Based on today's approximate STC price of $36 per certificate and current deeming settings, the indicative upfront value could look something like this:
| System size | Estimated project cost* | Estimated STC incentive | Effective upfront discount |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 kW | ~$90,000 | ~$24,840 | 21.63% |
| 200 kW | ~$170,000 | ~$49,752 | 22.64% |
| 300 kW | ~$295,000 | ~$74,592 | 20.18% |
| 400 kW | ~$360,000 | ~$99,468 | 21.65% |
| 500 kW | ~$495,000 | ~$124,344 | 20.08% |
| 600 kW | ~$585,000 | ~$149,256 | 20.33% |
| 700 kW | ~$680,000 | ~$174,096 | 20.38% |
| 800 kW | ~$775,000 | ~$198,972 | 20.43% |
| 900 kW | ~$870,000 | ~$223,848 | 20.46% |
| 1 MW | ~$960,000 | ~$248,508 | 20.56% |

Actual project cost, STC pricing and eligibility depend on your site and equipment, and remain subject to the SRES expansion being finalised.
