Project Overview

Founded in 1945 by Jack Shiels, Shiels Jewellers has grown from a small store in Adelaide’s Central Market Arcade to a well-known retail chain with stores across SA, QLD, NSW, and WA, plus a thriving online presence. Its Compton Street headquarters in Adelaide recently received a solar makeover, with Venergy Solar designing and installing a high-performance 75 kW rooftop system tailored to the building's unique challenges.

This installation marks another step forward in Shiels’ long-standing commitment to innovation and sustainability.

“With a challenging roof space and a high demand for electricity, Venergy designed a system that would optimise and maximise the available roof space. Boasting 25-year panel and optimiser warranties, this system is of the highest standard and quality and will power our long-standing family business for many years to come.”

The Challenge

The rooftop of Shiels’ HQ presented limited usable space and a high on-site energy demand. Venergy faced the challenge of maximising system output despite a complex layout and potential shading issues.

The Solution

Venergy designed a solar system that maximised every bit of the available roof space at Shiels’ headquarters. The installation utilised SunPower 415W high-efficiency panels, chosen for their superior performance and reliability. To manage the building’s complex roof layout and potential shading issues, SolarEdge inverters and panel-level optimisers were integrated, ensuring optimal energy production from each panel. The system was mounted using a Clenergy mounting system, with some panels laid flat to make the most of the available space. While this approach will require periodic cleaning, it provided the best solution for the site’s constraints.

The Results

The outcome is a sleek, space-efficient 75 kW rooftop solar system tailored to Shiels’ energy demands and architectural challenges. The system is expected to generate approximately 67,500 kWh of clean electricity annually, delivering significant cost savings from the first year. Beyond the financial benefits, the installation enhances the building’s sustainability profile and reduces its reliance on the electricity grid.
