Project Overview

The McDonald’s Solar Efficiency Program, delivered by Venergy Solar in partnership with Bella Build & Design, involved the turnkey solar EPC delivery for four operating McDonald’s restaurants in South Australia. With a total system size of 134.09 kWp, the project aimed to enhance the energy efficiency and sustainability profile of one of the world’s most iconic QSR brands, while maintaining McDonald’s exacting operational standards.

Each site required tailored engineering and construction solutions to address structural nuances, minimise disruption, and deliver high-performance systems aligned with McDonald’s environmental strategy and Bella Build’s construction timelines. The initiative underscores the QSR industry’s transition toward low-carbon operations and sustainable business practices.

“Sustainability is a core pillar of McDonald’s global vision, and the successful completion of these tailored solar installations across our South Australian restaurants marks another important step toward reducing our carbon footprint. We’re proud to have partnered with Bella Build and Venergy Solar—who demonstrated exceptional professionalism, technical expertise, and a clear commitment to quality and safety throughout the project. The installations were executed seamlessly with minimal disruption to our operations, and the energy savings we’re seeing are a testament to the thoughtful engineering and execution behind the work.”

The Challenge

Delivering rooftop solar systems across four geographically dispersed McDonald’s restaurants posed significant logistical, structural, and operational challenges. Each site featured distinct architectural constraints — from limited roof space to high-wind exposure — demanding customised engineering and precise installation planning. Coordinating solar integration during either active trading or concurrent building works required strict timing, minimal disruption, and close alignment with Bella Build’s construction program. Adhering to McDonald’s global quality and safety standards further heightened the complexity, necessitating faultless execution across every aspect of the project.

The Solution

Venergy designed and deployed tailored solar energy systems for each site, incorporating high-efficiency Trina Solar panels and Sungrow inverters to ensure reliable performance in varying conditions. Bespoke mounting solutions addressed structural limitations such as compact or shaded roof areas and wind exposure zones. Solar-ready electrical infrastructure was integrated in coordination with Bella Build’s broader construction works, streamlining connection and compliance processes. All works were completed under stringent WHS procedures and quality assurance systems, with real-time project oversight enabled via cloud-based communication tools and digital field reporting platforms.

The Results

The four-restaurant rollout now delivers a combined estimated annual output of 187,726 kWh, significantly offsetting each site’s energy costs and carbon footprint. Installations were completed defect-free and on schedule, with zero disruption to store operations or construction programs. The systems are contributing to a reduced reliance on grid-supplied electricity, aligning with McDonald’s global sustainability targets. The successful delivery under a fast-tracked D&C model has positioned this initiative as a scalable benchmark for future QSR energy upgrades across Australia.
