Project Overview

The City of Playford Solar Project, executed by Venergy Solar, involved the comprehensive design, engineering, and installation of 202kW of high-performance solar systems across seven strategic council facilities, including community centres, sports clubs, and cultural venues such as the Virginia Horticultural Centre, The Precinct, Uley Road Hall, and Windsor Carpark. Utilizing advanced photovoltaic panel technology, specifically Trina Solar TSM-500NEG18R.20 (500W) panels, and intelligent inverter systems like Sungrow SG30CX and SG15RT models, the project was delivered within an ambitious eight-week timeframe.

Through innovative engineering, reinforced structural mounting, and smart technology solutions, the installations achieved significant first-year energy savings, ranging from 20.52 MWh to 59.75 MWh per site, translating into substantial financial savings (up to $15,001 excluding GST annually for individual sites). Driven by the City of Playford’s commitment to sustainability, cost efficiency, and environmental leadership, the initiative has enhanced community infrastructure resilience and established a blueprint for future battery integration.

Globally recognized by Trina Solar as a leading example of renewable energy innovation led by an Australian local government, the project has strengthened community engagement, supported local economic development, and elevated the City of Playford's profile as an international sustainability leader.

“This initiative aligns with our vision for a greener, more sustainable Playford. By investing in renewable energy, we are not only reducing costs but also demonstrating environmental leadership that benefits our broader community.”

The Challenge

The City of Playford solar project involved the design and delivery of a 202kW system across seven diverse council-owned sites, including theatres, sports clubs, and community halls. Each site presented unique engineering, structural, and logistical challenges, from varying roof types to complex electrical configurations. The project was further constrained by a tight eight-week deadline leading up to Christmas, requiring seamless coordination across multiple teams. As a publicly funded initiative, the project also had to meet strict environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards and uphold responsible procurement policies.

The Solution

Venergy Solar responded with a tailored, high-performance solution that met both the technical and sustainability demands of the project. We selected Trinasolar panels, Sungrow inverters, and Clenergy mounting systems, all recognised for their durability, efficiency, and ethical manufacturing standards. Structural reinforcements were carried out where needed to comply with engineering assessments, and each installation was planned around site-specific requirements to maximise safety and efficiency. The systems were integrated with smart monitoring tools, enabling real-time performance tracking and future-readiness for battery upgrades.

The Results

The project was successfully delivered on time and within budget, with zero safety incidents across all sites. The systems now contribute to substantial operational savings and emissions reductions for the council, supporting Playford’s 5.5 NABERS-aligned energy goals. Beyond environmental performance, the initiative has created local job opportunities and reinforced the council’s commitment to sustainable, community-focused infrastructure. It stands as a benchmark for large-scale municipal clean energy projects and has opened the door for future operations and maintenance collaboration between Venergy and the City of Playford.
